Background: securing an indwelling urinary catheter is a preventive practice that is often neglected; this leads to an increase in adverse outcomes from positioning the bladder catheter.
Purpose: to describe the efficacy of indwelling urinary catheter dressing and securement devices in hospitalized adult patients.
Materials and Methods: a narrative literature review on indwelling urinary catheter dressing and securement devices was conducted between April and August 2023. The following databases were searched: PubMed (via MEDLINE), CINAHL (via EBSCO), Scopus and Web of Science (via EBSCO).
Results: the search generated 310 records, of which the review process included 5. The identified outcomes are patient comfort, device dislocation, device traction movement, presence of urinary tract infection, and urethral meatus erosion. Use of StatLock® reported a lower rate of infection [transureteral catheter (7/40, 18.5% vs 12/41, 29%) or a suprapubic catheter (1/20, 5% vs 2/17, 11, 8%)], a reduction in dislocation, erosion of the urethral meatus and traction of the bladder catheter.
Discussion: Using the correct securement device for urinary catheters is a topic that is still little investigated, but encouraging results emerge when using the correct securement device for urinary tract infections.
