Introduction: The management and detection of pain in Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs) remains to this day one of the most difficult challenges faced by healthcare professionals. The assessment of pain in children is complex and even more so in the setting
of the NICU. The use of appropriate instruments to measure pain in UTIP is necessary, and the literature shows that the gold standard is the COMFORT-Behavior (COMFORT-B) scale, an instrument, however, that is not always used correctly by professionals.
The purpose of the study protocol is to validate the Behavioral Pain Scale (BPS) in the UTIP setting by evaluating it in the detection of pain in intubated, sedated and mechanically ventilated pediatric patients.
Materials and methods: Internal consistency validation study protocol, inter-rater reliability, concurrent validity between BPS and COMFORT-B and NRS, and discriminant validity. Face and construct validity of BPS were found to be adequate in a previous study. The protocol was approved by the Area Vasta Emilia Nord Ethics Committee and authorized by the University Hospital of Parma and the Gaslini Institute of Genoa.
Expected Results: It is hypothesized that the validity of BPS for pain measurement in UTIP can be demonstrated.
Conclusions: The BPS could become an effective and user-friendly tool for nurses in detecting pain in sedated and intubated and mechanically ventilated children, thus also improving their management.
