Un servizio sanitario di qualità, oltre a possedere requisiti di alto livello e operare in sicurezza, deve organizzare le risorse in modo efficace prevedendo l'assegnazione dei pazienti al setting di cura appropriato e la riorganizzazione delle risorse sulla base delle loro necessità. Classificare i pazienti secondo i loro bisogni può fornire informazioni utili per l'organizzazione e l'erogazione dell'assistenza infermieristica. In ambito pediatrico diversi strumenti per la classificazione dei pazienti non soddisfano tutti i criteri metodologico-scientifici per essere ritenuti affidabili e validi, o sono difficilmente applicabili nella pratica. E' stato quindi costruito uno strumento (Gaslini Pediatric Nursing Score) per la valutazione della complessità dell'assistenza infermieristica pediatrica necessaria per soddisfare bisogni, identificati come core, di bambini o adolescenti ricoverati e delle loro famiglie.
