La grande eterogenicità dei pazienti ricoverati in terapia intensiva ha amplificato la diseguaglianza tra gravità clinica e complessità assistenziale. In passato sono stati proposti in terapia intensiva dei sistemi che, basandosi sul numero di insufficienze d’organo presenti nei pazienti, permettessero di identificare i pazienti a bassa versus alta complessità .
