Patients undergoing extracorporeal circulation (ECMO) require high doses of anticoagulant for the circuit to function properly, which exposes them to a high bleeding risk. The most common bleeding sites are the cannulae insertion sites, skin and mucous membranes. Less frequent, but potentially fatal, are major bleedings (pulmonary, gastrointestinal, retroperitoneal and central nervous system).
