Introduzione: lo svezzamento dei pazienti adulti dalla ventilazione meccanica (VM) in terapia intensiva (TI) è tuttora tra i cosiddetti hot topics in area critica poiché l’aumento del tempo di permanenza in ventilazione si associa ad un incremento di mortalità. Il weaning è attualmente classificato in semplice, difficile o prolungato sulla base del tempo e dei tentativi impiegati per raggiungere l’indipendenza del paziente dal ventilatore.
