The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published a technical report on the lasting effects of early toxic stress on human development. Neonatal Intensive Care Units have high volumes of background noise from alarms, equipment and conversations between staff. The intensity, frequency and characteristics of ICU sounds are difficult to predict and are particularly stressful and harmful to patients.
