Introduzione: Gli stati di vulnerabilità e dipendenza imposti dall’avanzare dell’età e dal cambiamento delle condizioni di salute pos-sono minare profondamente il senso di dignità percepito con la conseguente perdita del significato del proprio vivere che espone i pazienti al pericolo di mettere in forse le ragioni del continuare ad esistere. I progressi della ricerca sul campo permettono adesso di misurare ilivelli di perdita di dignità , nonché di individuare i fattori che più vi incidono, nelle popolazioni di pazienti cronici.
