I pazienti sottoposti alla circolazione extracorporea (ECMO) necessitano di elevati dosaggi di anticoagulante per il buon funzionamento del circuito e ciò li espone ad un alto rischio emorragico. Le sedi più comuni di sanguinamento sono i siti di inserzione delle cannule, la cute e le mucose. Meno frequenti, ma potenzialmente fatali sono invece i sanguinamenti maggiori (polmonari, gastrointestinali, retroperitoneali e del sistema nervoso centrale).
